Cross My Heart by Katie Klein. Contemporary Ya.
I know it’s not one from the contemporary challenge for this year because it was published in 2011, but I wanted to read it anyway.
It’s been a while since I read anything in the contemporary genre, and I was taken back to why it is so good.
Katie writes really well, I love the short snappy sentences and the thought-provoking word choices, actually, he way it was written is a lot of why I liked it so much. It built a world, not just the character, you felt like you knew her and were invested in her problems, and I love that.
A lot of it read just as you would expect a ya romance to, but the twist at the end made me stop and re read. I don’t want to give anything away, but I doubt too many people would guess what was about to happen.
I thought that I would quickly mention it does have some bad language, not a lot, but I thought I’d note it just in case some people would find it offensive.
Overall, I thought it was well worth reading and the price tag of $3.99, which is slightly higher than some other indie authors, but I felt it was justified.
